두 번이나 사라진 줄 알았던 새

섬 동쪽에서 폴리는 오래된 숲으로 날아갔다. 이끼가 나무를 덮었다. 햇빛이 땅에 거의 닿지 않았다. 작은 회색과 분홍색 새가 오직 이곳에만 산다. 이름은 프리올루다.

In the east of the island, Polly flew into an old forest. Moss covered the trees. Little sunlight reached the ground. A small grey and pink bird lives only here. Its name is the priolo.

이 새는 사라질 뻔했다. 천구백삼십이년 뒤로 아무도 새를 보지 못했다. 그러다 천구백육십칠년에 사람들이 다시 몇 마리를 찾았다. 하지만 농장이 새의 집을 계속 빼앗았다. 곧 백 쌍도 남지 않았다. 유럽에서 가장 귀한 새 중 하나다.

The bird almost disappeared. People saw none after nineteen thirty-two. Then in nineteen sixty-seven, people found some again. But farms kept taking its home. Soon fewer than one hundred pairs were left. It is one of Europe's rarest birds.

사람들은 새를 돕기 위해 열심히 일했다. 알맞은 나무를 다시 심었다. 폴리는 프리올루 두 마리가 날아가는 것을 보았다. 가슴이 연한 분홍빛으로 빛났다.

People worked hard to help it. They planted the right trees again. Polly saw two priolos fly by. Their breasts flashed soft pink.

폴리는 가만히 있었다. 숲도 다시 조용해졌다. 좋은 거래 같았다. 고요를 주고, 아직 살아 있는 새를 얻었다.

Polly stayed still. The forest grew still again. It felt like a good trade: quiet, for a bird that still lives.
