Im Osten der Insel flog Polly in einen alten Wald. Moos bedeckte die Bäume. Wenig Licht erreichte den Boden. Ein kleiner grauer und rosa Vogel lebt nur hier. Er heißt Priolo.
Der Vogel verschwand fast. Niemand sah ihn nach neunzehnhundertzweiunddreißig. Dann, neunzehnhundertsiebenundsechzig, fanden Menschen wieder welche. Aber Bauernhöfe nahmen ihm weiter seinen Lebensraum. Bald blieben weniger als hundert Paare übrig. Er ist einer der seltensten Vögel Europas.
Menschen arbeiteten hart, um ihm zu helfen. Sie pflanzten wieder die richtigen Bäume. Polly sah zwei Priolos in der Nähe fliegen. Ihre Brust leuchtete sanft rosa.
Polly blieb still. Der Wald wurde wieder still. Es fühlte sich wie ein guter Tausch an: Stille, für einen Vogel, der noch lebt.
