两次被认定消失的鸟

在岛的东部,波莉飞进一片古老的森林。苔藓盖住了树。阳光很少照到地面。有一种灰粉色的小鸟只住在这里。它叫亚速尔灰雀。

In the east of the island, Polly flew into an old forest. Moss covered the trees. Little sunlight reached the ground. A small grey and pink bird lives only here. Its name is the priolo.

这种鸟差点消失了。一九三二年以后,人们再也没有看到它。后来在一九六七年,人们又找到了一些。但是农田不断夺走它的家。很快只剩下不到一百对。它是欧洲最稀有的鸟之一。

The bird almost disappeared. People saw none after nineteen thirty-two. Then in nineteen sixty-seven, people found some again. But farms kept taking its home. Soon fewer than one hundred pairs were left. It is one of Europe's rarest birds.

人们很努力地帮助它。他们重新种回合适的树。波莉看见两只灰雀飞过。它们的胸口闪着浅粉色。

People worked hard to help it. They planted the right trees again. Polly saw two priolos fly by. Their breasts flashed soft pink.

波莉一动不动。森林又安静下来。这像一笔好交易:用安静,换一只还活着的鸟。

Polly stayed still. The forest grew still again. It felt like a good trade: quiet, for a bird that still lives.
