Burung yang Dua Kali Dianggap Hilang

Di timur pulau, Polly terbang masuk ke hutan tua. Lumut menutupi pohon. Sedikit cahaya sampai ke tanah. Seekor burung kecil kelabu dan merah muda hanya hidup di sini. Namanya priolo.

In the east of the island, Polly flew into an old forest. Moss covered the trees. Little sunlight reached the ground. A small grey and pink bird lives only here. Its name is the priolo.

Burung itu hampir hilang. Setelah tahun seribu sembilan ratus tiga puluh dua, tidak ada orang yang melihatnya. Lalu pada tahun seribu sembilan ratus enam puluh tujuh, orang menemukannya lagi. Tetapi ladang terus mengambil rumahnya. Lalu tersisa kurang dari seratus pasang. Ia salah satu burung terlangka di Eropa.

The bird almost disappeared. People saw none after nineteen thirty-two. Then in nineteen sixty-seven, people found some again. But farms kept taking its home. Soon fewer than one hundred pairs were left. It is one of Europe's rarest birds.

Orang bekerja keras untuk menolongnya. Mereka menanam pohon yang tepat lagi. Polly melihat dua priolo terbang. Dada mereka berkilau merah muda.

People worked hard to help it. They planted the right trees again. Polly saw two priolos fly by. Their breasts flashed soft pink.

Polly diam saja. Hutan menjadi sunyi lagi. Rasanya seperti pertukaran yang baik: sunyi, untuk burung yang masih hidup.

Polly stayed still. The forest grew still again. It felt like a good trade: quiet, for a bird that still lives.
