L'oiseau que l'on a cru perdu deux fois

À l'est de l'île, Polly entra dans une vieille forêt. De la mousse couvrait les arbres. Peu de lumière arrivait au sol. Un petit oiseau gris et rose vit seulement ici. Il s'appelle le priolo.

In the east of the island, Polly flew into an old forest. Moss covered the trees. Little sunlight reached the ground. A small grey and pink bird lives only here. Its name is the priolo.

L'oiseau a failli disparaître. Après mille neuf cent trente-deux, personne n'en voyait plus. Puis, en mille neuf cent soixante-sept, on en a retrouvé quelques-uns. Mais les fermes prenaient sa forêt. Bientôt, il restait moins de cent couples. C'est un des oiseaux les plus rares d'Europe.

The bird almost disappeared. People saw none after nineteen thirty-two. Then in nineteen sixty-seven, people found some again. But farms kept taking its home. Soon fewer than one hundred pairs were left. It is one of Europe's rarest birds.

Des gens ont beaucoup travaillé pour l'aider. Ils ont replanté les bons arbres. Polly vit deux priolos passer. Leur poitrine était rose clair.

People worked hard to help it. They planted the right trees again. Polly saw two priolos fly by. Their breasts flashed soft pink.

Polly resta immobile. La forêt redevint calme. Cela lui parut un bon échange : le silence, pour un oiseau qui vit encore.

Polly stayed still. The forest grew still again. It felt like a good trade: quiet, for a bird that still lives.
