The Bird Twice Given Up For Lost

In the east of the island, Polly flew into an old forest. Moss covered the trees. Little sunlight reached the ground. A small grey and pink bird lives only here. Its name is the priolo.

島の東で、ポリーは古い森に入りました。木は苔におおわれていました。日の光はあまり届きません。灰色と桃色の小さな鳥が、ここだけにすんでいます。名前はプリオロです。

The bird almost disappeared. People saw none after nineteen thirty-two. Then in nineteen sixty-seven, people found some again. But farms kept taking its home. Soon fewer than one hundred pairs were left. It is one of Europe's rarest birds.

この鳥はほとんど消えました。千九百三十二年のあと、だれも見ませんでした。でも千九百六十七年に、また見つかりました。しかし畑が増えて、すむ場所が減りました。つがいは百組より少なくなりました。ヨーロッパでいちばん少ない鳥の一つです。

People worked hard to help it. They planted the right trees again. Polly saw two priolos fly by. Their breasts flashed soft pink.

人々はこの鳥を守るためにがんばりました。正しい木をまた植えました。ポリーは二羽のプリオロを見ました。胸が桃色に光りました。

Polly stayed still. The forest grew still again. It felt like a good trade: quiet, for a bird that still lives.

ポリーはじっとしていました。森はまた静かになりました。よい取り引きだと思いました。静けさと、生きている鳥です。
