Os Dois Últimos Jardins da Europa

Numa colina verde junto ao mar, fileiras de pés de chá cresciam em linhas certinhas. Polly pousou num muro e olhou para as plantas. Esta é uma das duas únicas quintas de chá que restam em toda a Europa.

On a green hill by the sea, rows of tea plants grew in neat lines. Polly landed on a wall and looked at the plants. This is one of only two tea farms left in all of Europe.

A quinta começou em mil oitocentos e oitenta e três. Antes disso, a ilha produzia laranjas. Uma doença matou as laranjeiras. Então os produtores plantaram chá. Ainda hoje usam as mesmas máquinas antigas.

The farm started in eighteen eighty-three. Before that, the island grew oranges. A disease killed the orange trees. So the growers planted tea instead. They still use the same old machines today.

Dentro da fábrica, máquinas antigas enrolam e secam as folhas. Os trabalhadores colhem as folhas novas à mão. As folhas novas dão o melhor chá. Aqui não se usam produtos maus.

Inside the factory, old machines roll and dry the leaves. Workers pick the young leaves by hand. Young leaves make the best tea. No bad chemicals are used here.

Polly passeou junto aos pés de chá. Cheiravam a erva fresca. Uma mesma família de produtores cuida desta colina há muito tempo.

Polly walked by the tea plants. They smelled like fresh grass. One line of growers has cared for this hill for a very long time.
