유럽에 남은 마지막 두 정원

바다 옆 초록 언덕에 차나무가 줄지어 자랐다. 폴리는 담에 앉아 그 나무들을 보았다. 이곳은 유럽에 남은 두 개의 차 농장 중 하나다.

On a green hill by the sea, rows of tea plants grew in neat lines. Polly landed on a wall and looked at the plants. This is one of only two tea farms left in all of Europe.

농장은 천팔백팔십삼년에 시작했다. 그전에 섬은 오렌지를 길렀다. 병이 오렌지 나무를 죽였다. 그래서 사람들은 차를 심었다. 그들은 지금도 같은 오래된 기계를 쓴다.

The farm started in eighteen eighty-three. Before that, the island grew oranges. A disease killed the orange trees. So the growers planted tea instead. They still use the same old machines today.

공장 안에서 오래된 기계가 잎을 비비고 말린다. 일꾼들은 어린 잎을 손으로 딴다. 어린 잎이 가장 좋은 차가 된다. 이곳에서는 나쁜 약을 쓰지 않는다.

Inside the factory, old machines roll and dry the leaves. Workers pick the young leaves by hand. Young leaves make the best tea. No bad chemicals are used here.

폴리는 차나무 옆을 걸었다. 잎에서 싱그러운 풀 냄새가 났다. 한 집안이 아주 오랫동안 이 언덕을 돌보았다.

Polly walked by the tea plants. They smelled like fresh grass. One line of growers has cared for this hill for a very long time.
