ヨーロッパに残る最後の二つの茶園

海の近くの緑の丘に、茶の木がきれいに並んでいました。ポリーは石垣にとまって、その木を見ました。ここはヨーロッパに二つだけ残っている茶畑の一つです。

On a green hill by the sea, rows of tea plants grew in neat lines. Polly landed on a wall and looked at the plants. This is one of only two tea farms left in all of Europe.

この畑は千八百八十三年に始まりました。まえは島でオレンジを作っていました。でも病気で木が枯れました。それで生産者は茶を植えました。今も同じ古い機械を使っています。

The farm started in eighteen eighty-three. Before that, the island grew oranges. A disease killed the orange trees. So the growers planted tea instead. They still use the same old machines today.

工場の中では、古い機械が葉を揉んで乾かします。人が若い葉を手で摘みます。若い葉がいちばんおいしいお茶になります。ここでは悪い薬を使いません。

Inside the factory, old machines roll and dry the leaves. Workers pick the young leaves by hand. Young leaves make the best tea. No bad chemicals are used here.

ポリーは茶の木のそばを歩きました。葉は新しい草のにおいがしました。ここの人たちは長いあいだ、この丘を大切にしてきました。

Polly walked by the tea plants. They smelled like fresh grass. One line of growers has cared for this hill for a very long time.
