七枚のスカートと銀色の魚

三日目、ポリーは町へ下りました。ケーブルカーに乗りました。崖を上り下りする小さな電車です。ポリーは中に座って、赤い屋根を見ました。

On day three Polly went down to the town. She rode the funicular, a small train that goes up and down the cliff. Polly sat inside and watched the red roofs.

ビーチには木の棚がたくさんありました。棚の上には小さな銀色の魚がいっぱいです。太陽の下で、魚を乾かしています。これはこの町の古い伝統です。

The beach was full of wooden racks. On the racks were many small silver fish. They were drying in the sun. This is an old tradition here.

かもめのようなおばさんたちが、丁寧に魚を裏返していました。みんな七枚のスカートを重ねて着ていました。七枚のスカート、一週間の七日のようです。

Gull ladies turned the fish with care. Each lady wore seven skirts, one on top of another. Seven skirts, like the seven days of the week.

夕方、ポリーは赤い灯りの部屋へ戻りました。波は昨日より高くなっていました。今度は、その音も聞こえました。

In the evening Polly went back to her red lantern. The waves were taller than yesterday. Now she could hear them too.
