The Last Two Gardens in Europe

On a green hill by the sea, rows of tea plants grew in neat lines. Polly landed on a wall and looked at the plants. This is one of only two tea farms left in all of Europe.

على تل أخضر قرب البحر، نمت صفوف من نباتات الشاي في خطوط مرتّبة. حطّت بولي على جدار ونظرت إلى النباتات. هذه واحدة من مزرعتي شاي فقط بقيتا في أوروبا كلها.

The farm started in eighteen eighty-three. Before that, the island grew oranges. A disease killed the orange trees. So the growers planted tea instead. They still use the same old machines today.

بدأت المزرعة في عام ألف وثمانمئة وثلاثة وثمانين. قبل ذلك زرعت الجزيرة البرتقال. قتل مرض أشجار البرتقال. فزرع المزارعون الشاي بدلاً منها. وما زالوا يستخدمون الآلات القديمة نفسها اليوم.

Inside the factory, old machines roll and dry the leaves. Workers pick the young leaves by hand. Young leaves make the best tea. No bad chemicals are used here.

داخل المصنع، تلفّ آلات قديمة الأوراق وتجفّفها. يقطف العمال الأوراق الصغيرة باليد. الأوراق الصغيرة تصنع أفضل شاي. لا تُستخدم هنا مواد ضارة.

Polly walked by the tea plants. They smelled like fresh grass. One line of growers has cared for this hill for a very long time.

سارت بولي قرب نباتات الشاي. كانت رائحتها مثل العشب الطازج. اعتنى المزارعون بهذا التل زمناً طويلاً جداً.
