Αυτό το κτίριο δεν έχει τέταρτο όροφο. Στείλ' το στον φίλο που σίγουρα θα ρωτούσε γιατί. Μπαίνεις σε ένα ασανσέρ σε έναν ψηλό πύργο στην Ανατολική Ασία και πατάς το κουμπί για έναν ψηλό όροφο. Οι αριθμοί πάνε τρία, μετά πέντε. Το τέσσερα απλώς λείπει.
Δεν είναι λάθος. Στα κινέζικα, τα ιαπωνικά και τα κορεατικά, η λέξη για το τέσσερα ακούγεται σχεδόν ίδια με τη λέξη για τον θάνατο. Πολλοί αποφεύγουν τον αριθμό, όπως κάποια κτίρια στη Δύση παραλείπουν τον δέκατο τρίτο όροφο. Έτσι οι κατασκευαστές τον βγάζουν τελείως ή γράφουν τρία Α στη θέση του.
Δες αρκετά ασανσέρ στο Πεκίνο, στο Τόκιο ή στη Σεούλ και θα προσέξεις το ίδιο κενό ξανά και ξανά: ούτε τέταρτος όροφος, ούτε δέκατος τέταρτος, ούτε εικοστός τέταρτος. Ένας ολόκληρος αριθμός, βγαλμένος από την καθημερινή ζωή.
