Não Há Quarto Andar em Lado Nenhum

Este prédio não tem quarto andar. Marca o amigo que ia perguntar logo porquê. Entras num elevador num prédio alto no Leste Asiático e carregas no botão de um andar alto. Os números vão do três para o cinco. O quatro simplesmente não existe.

This building has no fourth floor. Tag the friend who would definitely ask why. You step into an elevator in a tall building in East Asia and press the button for a high floor. The numbers go three, then five. Four is simply missing.

Não é um erro. Em chinês, japonês e coreano, a palavra para quatro soa quase igual à palavra para morte. Muita gente evita o número da mesma forma que alguns prédios no Ocidente saltam o décimo terceiro andar. Por isso os construtores deixam-no de fora por completo, ou escrevem três A.

It is not a mistake. In Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, the word for four sounds almost exactly like the word for death. Many people avoid the number the same way some buildings in the West skip a thirteenth floor. So builders leave it out completely, or write three A instead.

Repara em elevadores suficientes em Pequim, Tóquio ou Seul e vais notar a mesma falha vezes sem conta: sem andar quatro, sem andar catorze, sem andar vinte e quatro. Um número inteiro, retirado da vida diária.

Look at enough elevators in Beijing, Tokyo, or Seoul and you will notice the same gap again and again: no floor four, no floor fourteen, no floor twenty-four. A whole number, removed from daily life.
