생각하는 몸

셋째 날 아침, 키아라는 작은 투명 미로를 수조에 넣었어요. 미로의 중앙에는 게 고기가 있었어요. 길은 오른쪽으로 두 번, 왼쪽으로 한 번 꺾어야 했어요.

On the third morning, Chiara put a small clear maze in the tank. There was crab meat at the centre. The way through had two right turns and a left turn.

파스타는 구석에서 지켜보고 있었어요.

Pasta watched from her corner.

파스타는 두 개의 팔을 미로 쪽으로 보냈어요. 몸은 움직이지 않았어요. 팔은 서로 다른 방향으로 갔어요. 하나는 위로, 하나는 안으로 들어갔어요.

Pasta sent two arms toward the maze. Her body did not move. The arms went different ways. One went on top. One went inside.

문어는 많은 뉴런을 가지고 있어요. 그 중 3분의 2는 머리가 아닌 팔에 있어요. 각 팔은 자체 신경계를 가지고 있어요. 각 팔은 문제를 해결할 수 있어요.

An octopus has many neurons. Two thirds of them are in the arms, not in the head. Each arm has its own nervous system. Each arm can solve a problem.

첫 번째 팔은 미로를 통과했어요. 모퉁이에서 방향을 바꿨어요. 두 번째 팔은 작은 문을 찾았어요. 첫 번째 팔은 안쪽에서 밀었어요. 두 번째 팔은 바깥쪽에서 밀었어요. 문이 열렸어요.

The first arm went through the maze. It turned at the corners. The second arm found a small gate. The first arm pushed from inside. The second arm pushed from outside. The gate opened.

팔이 게 고기를 가져갔어요.

The arm took the crab meat.

파스타는 몸을 움직이지 않았어요.

Pasta had not moved her body.

키아라는 자신의 영상을 보았어요. "팔이 음식을 가져갔어,"라고 그녀가 말했어요. "문어가 미로를 푼 걸까, 아니면 팔이 푼 걸까? 우리는 알 수 없어."

Chiara watched her video. "The arms got the food," she said. "Did the octopus solve the maze, or did the arms solve it? We do not know."

폴리는 파스타를 바라보았어요. 문어는 게 고기를 부리로 끌어당겼어요.

Polly looked at Pasta. The octopus pulled the crab meat to her beak.
