一つの火口、二つの色

高い空から、ポリーは大きな火口を見下ろした。二万二千年以上前にできたもので、小さな町と二つの湖が入るほど広い。真ん中を細長い陸地が横切っている。その両側で水の色が違った。一方は青い湖、もう一方は緑の湖だ。

From high in the sky, Polly looked down into one huge crater. It was more than twenty-two thousand years old and big enough to hold a small town and two lakes. A strip of land crossed the middle. On each side, the water was a different color: one lake blue, one lake green.

二つの湖は、じつは一つの水だ。陸地の下の水路でつながっている。でも、まわりの様子が違う。青い湖は深くて空を映す。緑の湖は草木と小さな藻の近くにあるので、水が緑に見える。

The two lakes are really one piece of water, joined by a channel under the land. But everything around them looks different. The blue lake is deeper and reflects the sky. The green lake sits near plants and tiny algae, which turn its color green.

ポリーは二つの色のあいだの陸地に沿って低く飛んだ。片側には漁船があり、もう片側の丘の上には牛がいた。濃い霧が流れてきて、まず緑の湖を、次に青い湖を隠した。

Polly flew low along the strip of land between the colors. She saw fishing boats on one side and cows on the hills above the other. Thick fog rolled in and covered first the green lake, then the blue one.

彼女は古い石垣にとまって、霧が晴れるのを待った。霧が晴れると、二つの湖はまだそこにあった。青と緑のままで。

She sat on an old stone wall and waited for the fog to clear. When it did, both lakes were still there, blue and green, just as before.
