一个火山口,两种颜色

从高空往下看,波莉看到一个巨大的火山口。它有两万两千多年的历史,大得可以装下一座小镇和两座湖。中间横着一道窄窄的陆地。两边的水颜色不一样:一边的湖是蓝色,另一边的湖是绿色。

From high in the sky, Polly looked down into one huge crater. It was more than twenty-two thousand years old and big enough to hold a small town and two lakes. A strip of land crossed the middle. On each side, the water was a different color: one lake blue, one lake green.

这两座湖其实是同一片水,底下有一条水道把它们连起来。可是它们周围的东西不一样。蓝湖比较深,映出天空。绿湖靠近植物,水里还有很小的藻类,所以看起来是绿色的。

The two lakes are really one piece of water, joined by a channel under the land. But everything around them looks different. The blue lake is deeper and reflects the sky. The green lake sits near plants and tiny algae, which turn its color green.

波莉低低地飞过两种颜色中间的那道陆地。她看见一边有渔船,另一边的山坡上有牛。浓雾卷了进来,先盖住绿湖,再盖住蓝湖。

Polly flew low along the strip of land between the colors. She saw fishing boats on one side and cows on the hills above the other. Thick fog rolled in and covered first the green lake, then the blue one.

她停在一堵旧石墙上,等雾散开。雾散了以后,两座湖还在那里,一蓝一绿,和刚才一样。

She sat on an old stone wall and waited for the fog to clear. When it did, both lakes were still there, blue and green, just as before.
