誰もそのチーズを捕まえたことがありません。一番負けず嫌いな友達に、これを送ろう。年に一度、イングランドのとても急な草の丘で、誰かが大きな丸いチーズを斜面に転がし、大勢の人がその後を追いかけて走ります。

Nobody has ever caught the cheese. Send this to your most competitive friend. Once a year, on a very steep grass hill in England, someone rolls a large wheel of cheese down the slope, and a crowd of people run after it.

丘があまりに急なので、ほとんどの走者は立ったままでいられません。ほとんどの区間を転がったり、ころんだり、滑ったりしながら下り、その間にチーズはどんどん速度を上げて、誰よりも先に丘を下ってしまいます。最初に丘のふもとを渡った人が勝ちです。実際にチーズを捕まえることは、これまで一度も本当には可能ではなかったからです。

The hill is so steep that most runners cannot stay on their feet. They roll, tumble, and slide most of the way down, while the cheese picks up speed fast enough to outrun every single one of them. Whoever crosses the bottom first wins, since actually catching the cheese has never really been possible.

この伝統がどう始まったのか、正確には誰も知りません。わかっているのは、この地域の人々がおよそ二百年前から記録に残してきたことと、実際にはもっと長く続けられてきたらしいということだけです。それでも毎年、他の国から新しい走者たちがやって来て挑戦し、毎年、人間と同じくらいの回数、丘のほうが勝っています。

Nobody knows exactly how the tradition began, only that people in the area have written about it for roughly two centuries and probably practiced it for longer. Every year, new runners from other countries arrive to try anyway, and every year, the hill wins as often as the humans do.
