Un cratere, due colori

In alto nel cielo, Polly guardò in basso dentro un enorme cratere. Aveva oltre ventiduemila anni ed era abbastanza grande da contenere una piccola cittadina e due laghi. Una striscia di terra attraversava il centro. Su ciascun lato, l'acqua aveva un colore diverso: un lago blu, un lago verde.

From high in the sky, Polly looked down into one huge crater. It was more than twenty-two thousand years old and big enough to hold a small town and two lakes. A strip of land crossed the middle. On each side, the water was a different color: one lake blue, one lake green.

I due laghi sono in realtà un'unica massa d'acqua, uniti da un canale sotto la terra. Ma tutto ciò che li circonda appare diverso. Il lago blu è più profondo e riflette il cielo. Il lago verde si trova vicino a piante e alghe minuscole, che colorano il suo colore di verde.

The two lakes are really one piece of water, joined by a channel under the land. But everything around them looks different. The blue lake is deeper and reflects the sky. The green lake sits near plants and tiny algae, which turn its color green.

Polly volò bassa lungo la striscia di terra tra i colori. Vide barche da pesca da un lato e mucche sulle colline sopra l'altro. Una fitta nebbia entrò e coprì prima il lago verde, poi quello blu.

Polly flew low along the strip of land between the colors. She saw fishing boats on one side and cows on the hills above the other. Thick fog rolled in and covered first the green lake, then the blue one.

Si sedette su un vecchio muretto di pietra e aspettò che la nebbia si diradasse. Quando successe, entrambi i laghi erano ancora lì, blu e verde, proprio come prima.

She sat on an old stone wall and waited for the fog to clear. When it did, both lakes were still there, blue and green, just as before.
