Yksi kraatteri, kaksi väriä

Korkealta taivaalta Polly katsoi alas yhteen valtavaan kraatteriin. Se oli yli kahdenkymmenenkahdentuhannen vuoden ikäinen ja tarpeeksi suuri pienelle kaupungille ja kahdelle järvelle. Kaistale maata halkoi sen keskeltä. Kummallakin puolella vesi oli eriväristä: toinen järvi sininen, toinen vihreä.

From high in the sky, Polly looked down into one huge crater. It was more than twenty-two thousand years old and big enough to hold a small town and two lakes. A strip of land crossed the middle. On each side, the water was a different color: one lake blue, one lake green.

Järvet ovat oikeastaan yhtä ja samaa vettä, jotka yhdistää kanava maan alla. Mutta kaikki niiden ympärillä näyttää erilaiselta. Sininen järvi on syvempi ja heijastaa taivasta. Vihreä järvi on lähellä kasveja ja pieniä leviä, jotka tekevät siitä vihreän.

The two lakes are really one piece of water, joined by a channel under the land. But everything around them looks different. The blue lake is deeper and reflects the sky. The green lake sits near plants and tiny algae, which turn its color green.

Polly lensi matalalla värien välissä olevaa maakaistaletta pitkin. Hän näki kalastusveneitä toisella puolella ja lehmiä kukkuloilla toisella. Paksu sumu vyöryi sisään ja peitti ensin vihreän järven, sitten sinisen.

Polly flew low along the strip of land between the colors. She saw fishing boats on one side and cows on the hills above the other. Thick fog rolled in and covered first the green lake, then the blue one.

Hän istui vanhalle kiviaidalle ja odotti sumun väistyvän. Kun se väistyi, molemmat järvet olivat yhä siellä, sininen ja vihreä, aivan kuten ennenkin.

She sat on an old stone wall and waited for the fog to clear. When it did, both lakes were still there, blue and green, just as before.
