Un cráter, dos colores

Desde lo alto del cielo, Polly miró hacia abajo, dentro de un enorme cráter. Tenía más de veintidós mil años y era lo bastante grande como para contener un pequeño pueblo y dos lagos. Una franja de tierra cruzaba el centro. A cada lado, el agua tenía un color diferente: un lago azul, un lago verde.

From high in the sky, Polly looked down into one huge crater. It was more than twenty-two thousand years old and big enough to hold a small town and two lakes. A strip of land crossed the middle. On each side, the water was a different color: one lake blue, one lake green.

Los dos lagos son en realidad una sola masa de agua, unida por un canal bajo la tierra. Pero todo lo que los rodea se ve diferente. El lago azul es más profundo y refleja el cielo. El lago verde está cerca de plantas y algas diminutas, que tiñen su color de verde.

The two lakes are really one piece of water, joined by a channel under the land. But everything around them looks different. The blue lake is deeper and reflects the sky. The green lake sits near plants and tiny algae, which turn its color green.

Polly voló bajo a lo largo de la franja de tierra entre los colores. Vio barcos de pesca en un lado y vacas en las colinas sobre el otro. Una niebla espesa entró y cubrió primero el lago verde, luego el azul.

Polly flew low along the strip of land between the colors. She saw fishing boats on one side and cows on the hills above the other. Thick fog rolled in and covered first the green lake, then the blue one.

Se sentó en un viejo muro de piedra y esperó a que la niebla se despejara. Cuando lo hizo, ambos lagos seguían allí, azul y verde, igual que antes.

She sat on an old stone wall and waited for the fog to clear. When it did, both lakes were still there, blue and green, just as before.
