맛을 보는 팔

손을 뻗어 무언가를 만지면 모양과 질감이 느껴지죠. 문어가 팔을 뻗을 때는 더 이상한 일이 벌어져요. 팔마다 늘어선 수백 개의 빨판으로, 닿는 순간 그것을 맛봐요.

Reach out and touch something, and you feel its shape and texture. An octopus reaching out does something stranger: it tastes what it touches, instantly, through hundreds of suckers lining each arm.

과학자들은 최근 문어의 빨판에 다른 어떤 동물에게서도 발견된 적 없는 특별한 수용체가 있다는 걸 알아냈어요. 물에 녹지 않는 화학 물질을 감지하도록 만들어진 수용체예요. 덕분에 문어는 바위의 어두운 틈에 팔을 밀어 넣기만 해도 그 안에 무엇이 숨어 있는지 바로 알 수 있어요. 먹이인지, 위험인지, 아무것도 없는지를요. 눈으로 보거나 밖으로 꺼내 볼 필요도 없어요.

Scientists recently discovered that octopus suckers contain special receptors unlike anything found in other animals, built to sense chemicals that do not dissolve in water. This lets an octopus slide an arm into a dark crack in the rocks and immediately know what is hiding there, food, danger, or nothing at all, without needing to see it or pull it out first.

이건 세상을 경험하는 완전히 다른 방식이에요. 촉각과 미각이 하나의 감각으로 합쳐져서, 따로 움직이는 여덟 개의 팔에 퍼져 있는 거죠. 캄캄한 어둠 속에서 사냥하는 문어에게는 그 조합이 눈보다 훨씬 쓸모 있을지도 몰라요.

It is a completely different way of experiencing the world, touch and taste combined into a single sense, spread across eight independent arms. For an octopus hunting in total darkness, that combination might be more useful than eyes ever could be.
