上に落ちる滝

この滝をよく見てほしい。水は下に落ちていない。逆再生の映像のように、空へ向かって吹き上がっている。

Look closely at this waterfall. The water is not falling down. It is blowing up, back into the sky, like a video playing backward.

この不思議な光景は、風のとても強い日に、ノルウェーの高い滝で起こる。強い風が、落ちてくる水に正面からぶつかる。いちばん小さな水の粒は軽いので、風にさらわれてしまう。地面に落ちるかわりに、空へ舞い上がるのだ。

This strange sight happens on very windy days at tall waterfalls in Norway. Strong wind pushes hard against the falling water. The smallest drops are light enough for the wind to catch. Instead of dropping to the ground, they fly back up into the air.

大きな水の粒は重すぎて、こうはならない。向きを変えるのは、小さくて軽いしぶきだけだ。風の強い日にここに立てば、滝がまるごと気を変えるところを見られるかもしれない。

Big drops of water are too heavy for this. Only the tiny, light spray turns around. Stand here on a windy day, and you might watch an entire waterfall seem to change its mind.
