毎年冬になると起こることです。外の寒いところで地図を確認しようとスマホを取り出すと、電源が切れてしまいます。さっきまで40%だったのに。バッテリーが嘘をついていたのでしょうか?ある意味では、そうです。
スマホの中にはリチウムバッテリーが入っていますが、バッテリーは電気のタンクではありません。それは小さな化学工場です。電力はバッテリーの両側を行き来する粒子によって生み出されますが、ほとんどの化学反応と同じように、寒くなるとその動きが遅くなります。凍えるような空気の中では、粒子の動きが非常に遅くなり、バッテリーは十分な電力を供給できず、電圧が下がります。スマホは低い電圧を検知し、バッテリーが空だと判断して、自分を守るために電源を切ります。
証拠はその後に現れます。暖かい部屋に入ると、化学反応が目を覚まし、同じスマホが何事もなかったかのように30%のバッテリーで再び電源が入ります。エネルギーはずっとそこにあったのです。ただ、遅い反応の背後で凍っていただけです。だから冬には、スマホを体温に近い内ポケットに入れておきましょう。バッテリーが弱いわけではありません。ただあなたの天気が苦手なだけなのです。
