Succede ogni inverno. Sei fuori al freddo, tiri fuori il telefono per controllare la mappa, e si spegne. Un minuto fa mostrava quaranta percento. La batteria stava mentendo? In un certo senso, sì.
Dentro il tuo telefono c'è una batteria al litio, e una batteria non è un serbatoio di elettricità. È una piccola fabbrica chimica. L'energia viene prodotta da particelle che si muovono tra due lati della batteria, e come nella maggior parte delle reazioni chimiche, quel movimento rallenta quando fa freddo. Nell'aria gelida, le particelle si muovono così lentamente che la batteria non riesce a fornire abbastanza energia, e la sua tensione cala.
