Pasa todos los inviernos. Estás afuera en el frío, sacas tu teléfono para revisar el mapa, y se apaga. Hace un minuto mostraba cuarenta por ciento. ¿Estaba mintiendo la batería? En cierto modo, sí.
Dentro de tu teléfono hay una batería de litio, y una batería no es un tanque de electricidad. Es una pequeña fábrica química. La energía se produce cuando las partículas se mueven entre los dos lados de la batería, y como la mayoría de la química, ese movimiento se vuelve más lento cuando hace frío. En el aire helado, las partículas se mueven tan despacio que la batería no puede generar suficiente energía, y su voltaje baja. El teléfono detecta el voltaje bajo, decide que la batería debe estar vacía, y se apaga para protegerse.
La prueba viene después. Entras a un cuarto caliente, la química despierta, y el mismo teléfono se enciende con treinta por ciento de batería, como si nada hubiera pasado. La energía estuvo ahí todo el tiempo, solo congelada detrás de una reacción lenta. Así que en invierno, mantén tu teléfono en un bolsillo interior, cerca del calor de tu cuerpo. La batería no está débil. Simplemente no le gusta el clima.
