La stazione di Yaroslavsky a Mosca ha torrette verdi e bianche e tetti appuntiti. Fu costruita nel 1902.
Polly arrivò bassa attraverso la città. Mosca a giugno era calda. Fece un giro intorno alla stazione e atterrò sulla pensilina.
La Ferrovia Transiberiana inizia qui. Corre verso est per 9.289 chilometri, attraversando tutta la Russia. Termina a Vladivostok sul Pacifico. La linea fu completata nel 1916. È la ferrovia più lunga del mondo. Il treno principale si chiama Rossiya. Parte da Mosca all'una del pomeriggio. Arriva a Vladivostok sette giorni dopo.
Polly aveva un posto vicino al finestrino in seconda classe. Il suo compartimento aveva due cuccette superiori e due inferiori e un piccolo tavolo.
Due cuccette erano occupate. Una da una donna anziana tranquilla che leggeva. L'altra da un giovane con un laptop. Vide Polly e disse "OK."
Polly saltò sul tavolo e guardò fuori dal finestrino. La piattaforma era affollata.
All'una, il treno si mosse. La piattaforma scivolò via.
In mezz'ora, Mosca si era trasformata in sobborghi. In un'ora, in piccole case di legno chiamate dacie. In due ore, in foresta.
La donna anziana alzò lo sguardo dal suo libro. "Prima volta?" disse. "È un lungo viaggio. Sistemati."
