The Bay of Naples

Polly flew over the Bay of Naples. The water was green. Mount Vesuvius was across the bay. The air smelled of salt and diesel.

Polly vloog over de Baai van Napels. Het water was groen. De Vesuvius lag aan de overkant van de baai. De lucht rook naar zout en diesel.

She followed the shore. She saw laundry on balconies and scooters in the streets.

Ze volgde de kustlijn. Ze zag wasgoed op balkons en scooters in de straten.

Her destination was an old building by the water. A small sign read: STAZIONE ZOOLOGICA ANTON DOHRN, 1872.

This is the oldest marine biology institute in the world. It has studied octopuses since 1873.

Dit is het oudste instituut voor mariene biologie ter wereld. Het bestudeert al sinds 1873 octopussen.

Polly perched on the railing. A young researcher in a lab coat opened the back door. She smiled. "Come in."

Polly ging op de reling zitten. Een jonge onderzoeker in een laboratoriumjas opende de achterdeur. Ze glimlachte. "Kom binnen."

The building smelled like the sea. Long corridors had glass tanks on both sides. Polly saw sardines and a small octopus.

Het gebouw rook naar de zee. Lange gangen hadden aan beide zijden glazen tanks. Polly zag sardientjes en een kleine octopus.

The researcher's name was Chiara. "The octopuses are the smartest animals here," she said.

De naam van de onderzoeker was Chiara. "De octopussen zijn de slimste dieren hier," zei ze.

They came to a tall tank. The sign said PASTA, 2.3KG, GPO. Inside was a giant Pacific octopus. It folded itself into a pipe. One golden eye watched.

Ze kwamen bij een hoge tank. Het bordje zei PASTA, 2,3KG, GPO. Binnenin was een reuzenoctopus uit de Grote Oceaan. Hij vouwde zich in een pijp. Eén gouden oog keek toe.

"Pasta," Chiara said, "meet Polly."

"Pasta," zei Chiara, "ontmoet Polly."

The octopus did not move. But it watched.

De octopus bewoog niet. Maar hij keek.

"You can perch on the rim," Chiara said. "She will not splash you."

"Je kunt op de rand gaan zitten," zei Chiara. "Ze zal je niet nat spetteren."
