Polly volava sopra la Baia di Napoli. L'acqua era verde. Il Vesuvio si trovava dall'altra parte della baia. L'aria profumava di sale e diesel.
Seguì la costa. Vide panni stesi sui balconi e scooter nelle strade.
La sua destinazione era un vecchio edificio vicino all'acqua. Un piccolo cartello diceva: STAZIONE ZOOLOGICA ANTON DOHRN, 1872.
Questo è il più antico istituto di biologia marina del mondo. Studia i polpi dal 1873.
Polly si posò sulla ringhiera. Una giovane ricercatrice in camice bianco aprì la porta sul retro. Sorrise. "Entra pure."
L'edificio aveva l'odore del mare. Lunghi corridoi avevano vasche di vetro su entrambi i lati. Polly vide sardine e un piccolo polpo.
La ricercatrice si chiamava Chiara. "I polpi sono gli animali più intelligenti qui," disse.
Arrivarono a una vasca alta. Il cartello diceva PASTA, 2.3KG, GPO. Dentro c'era un grande polpo del Pacifico. Si piegava in un tubo. Un occhio dorato osservava.
"Pasta," disse Chiara, "ti presento Polly."
Il polpo non si mosse. Ma osservava.
"Puoi posarti sul bordo," disse Chiara. "Non ti schizzerà."
