خليج نابولي

حلقت بولي فوق خليج نابولي. كان الماء أخضر. كان جبل فيزوف على الجانب الآخر من الخليج. كانت رائحة الهواء مزيجًا من الملح والديزل.

Polly flew over the Bay of Naples. The water was green. Mount Vesuvius was across the bay. The air smelled of salt and diesel.

تتبعت الشاطئ. رأت الغسيل على الشرفات والدراجات النارية في الشوارع.

She followed the shore. She saw laundry on balconies and scooters in the streets.

كان وجهتها مبنى قديم بجانب الماء. كانت هناك لافتة صغيرة مكتوب عليها: محطة الأحياء البحرية أنطون دورن، 1872.

Her destination was an old building by the water. A small sign read: STAZIONE ZOOLOGICA ANTON DOHRN, 1872.

هذا هو أقدم معهد لعلم الأحياء البحرية في العالم. لقد درس الأخطبوطات منذ عام 1873.

This is the oldest marine biology institute in the world. It has studied octopuses since 1873.

جلست بولي على السور. فتحت باحثة شابة ترتدي معطفًا مخبريًا الباب الخلفي. ابتسمت وقالت: "تفضلي بالدخول."

Polly perched on the railing. A young researcher in a lab coat opened the back door. She smiled. "Come in."

كانت رائحة المبنى تشبه رائحة البحر. كانت الممرات الطويلة تحتوي على أحواض زجاجية على كلا الجانبين. رأت بولي السردين وأخطبوطًا صغيرًا.

The building smelled like the sea. Long corridors had glass tanks on both sides. Polly saw sardines and a small octopus.

كان اسم الباحثة كيارا. قالت: "الأخطبوطات هي أذكى الحيوانات هنا."

The researcher's name was Chiara. "The octopuses are the smartest animals here," she said.

وصلوا إلى حوض طويل. كانت اللافتة تقول: باستا، 2.3 كجم، جي بي أو. في الداخل كان هناك أخطبوط المحيط الهادئ العملاق. كان يطوي نفسه داخل أنبوب. عين ذهبية واحدة كانت تراقب.

They came to a tall tank. The sign said PASTA, 2.3KG, GPO. Inside was a giant Pacific octopus. It folded itself into a pipe. One golden eye watched.

قالت كيارا: "باستا، تعرفي على بولي."

"Pasta," Chiara said, "meet Polly."

لم يتحرك الأخطبوط. لكنه كان يراقب.

The octopus did not move. But it watched.

قالت كيارا: "يمكنك الجلوس على الحافة. لن ترش عليك الماء."

"You can perch on the rim," Chiara said. "She will not splash you."
