Polly átrepült a Nápolyi-öböl felett. A víz zöld volt. A Vezúv az öböl túloldalán emelkedett. A levegő sós és dízel szagú volt.
Követte a partot. Látott ruhákat az erkélyeken és robogókat az utcákon.
Úti célja egy régi épület volt a víz mellett. Egy kis tábla ezt írta: STAZIONE ZOOLOGICA ANTON DOHRN, 1872.
Ez a világ legrégebbi tengerbiológiai intézete. 1873 óta tanulmányozza a polipokat.
Polly a korlátra telepedett. Egy fiatal kutató fehér köpenyben kinyitotta a hátsó ajtót. Mosolygott. "Gyere be."
Az épületnek tenger illata volt. Hosszú folyosókon mindkét oldalon üvegtartályok voltak. Polly szardíniákat és egy kis polipot látott.
A kutató neve Chiara volt. "A polipok a legokosabb állatok itt," mondta.
Egy magas tartályhoz értek. A tábla ezt írta: PASTA, 2.3KG, GPO. Bent egy óriás csendes-óceáni polip volt. Egy csőbe hajtogatta magát. Egy aranyszem figyelt.
"Pasta," mondta Chiara, "ismerd meg Polly-t."
A polip nem mozdult. De figyelt.
"Rátelepedhetsz a peremre," mondta Chiara. "Nem fog lefröcskölni."
