Druhého rána byl vlak už 400 kilometrů východně od Moskvy.
Polly se probudila na malém stolku. Světlo bylo měkké a šedé. Galina, starší žena, pila čaj ze sklenice s kovovým držákem.
"Břízy," řekla.
Venku ubíhaly bílé stromy rychlostí šedesát kilometrů za hodinu. Táhly se dál a dál. Zaplňovaly celou krajinu.
Tohle je ruský březový pás. Bílé břízy rostou na mnoha chladných místech, kde jiné stromy nemohou.
Mladý muž, Pavel, vzhlédl. "Ty jsi papoušek," řekl. Vrátil se k svému laptopu.
Galina nalila čaj pro Polly. Byl jantarový. Na povrchu plátek citronu. Samovar byl horký už dvanáct hodin.
Polly si usrkla. Byl horký a sladký.
"Nejdelší část této cesty jsou stromy," řekla Galina. "Sedíš ve vlaku šest dní a díváš se na stromy. Není jim konce."
Čtyřicet procent Ruska je les. Rusko má dvacet procent všech stromů na světě.
Polly se znovu napila. Pavel psal. Galina četla svou knihu. Venku břízy stále míjely.
