Am zweiten Morgen war der Zug schon 400 Kilometer östlich von Moskau.
Polly wachte auf dem kleinen Tisch auf. Das Licht war weich und grau. Galina, die ältere Frau, trank Tee aus einem Glas mit einem Metallhalter.
"Birken," sagte sie.
Draußen rauschten weiße Bäume mit sechzig Kilometern pro Stunde vorbei. Sie zogen sich endlos hin. Sie füllten die ganze Landschaft aus.
Das ist der russische Birkenwaldgürtel. Weiße Birken wachsen an vielen kalten Orten, wo andere Bäume nicht gedeihen können.
Der junge Mann, Pavel, schaute auf. "Du bist der Papagei," sagte er. Dann wandte er sich wieder seinem Laptop zu.
Galina schenkte Polly Tee ein. Er war bernsteinfarben. Eine Zitronenscheibe schwamm obenauf. Der Samowar war seit zwölf Stunden heiß.
Polly nahm einen Schluck. Er war heiß und süß.
"Der längste Teil dieser Reise sind die Bäume," sagte Galina. "Man sitzt sechs Tage im Zug und schaut sich Bäume an. Es gibt kein Ende von ihnen."
Vierzig Prozent Russlands sind Wald. Russland hat zwanzig Prozent aller Bäume der Welt.
Polly trank noch einmal. Pavel tippte. Galina las ihr Buch. Draußen zogen die Birken weiter vorbei.
