El caballero y el ciervo

El cuarto día hacía mucho viento. Arriba en Sítio, el pueblo en lo alto del acantilado, soplaba con fuerza por la ancha plaza de piedra. Las gaviotas aterrizaban de lado. Polly cruzó la plaza dando saltitos, inclinándose contra el viento.

On the fourth day the wind was strong. Up in Sítio, the village on the clifftop, it blew hard across the wide stone square. Gulls landed sideways. Polly hopped across the square, leaning into the wind.

Al borde del acantilado había una capilla muy pequeña. Por dentro, las paredes estaban cubiertas de azulejos pintados, dibujos azules sobre blanco, desde el suelo hasta el techo. Adentro había frescor y silencio. Polly caminó sobre el suelo de baldosas, y el viento se quedó afuera.

At the edge of the cliff stood a very small chapel. Inside, the walls were covered with painted tiles, blue pictures on white, from the floor to the ceiling. It was cool and quiet. Polly walked across the tiled floor, and the wind stayed outside.

Los azulejos contaban una historia antigua, de hace más de ochocientos años. Un jinete cazaba un ciervo entre una niebla espesa. El ciervo saltó hacia la bruma, y el suelo se acabó. El caballo se detuvo justo al borde del acantilado. El jinete se salvó. La capilla marca ese lugar exacto.

The tiles told an old story, from more than eight hundred years ago. A rider was hunting a deer in thick fog. The deer jumped out into the mist, and the ground ended. The horse stopped at the very edge of the cliff. The rider was saved. The chapel marks that exact spot.

Cerca del faro, Polly encontró una alta estatua de piedra. Tenía cabeza de ciervo y sostenía una tabla de surf bajo un brazo. Una vieja leyenda y un deporte nuevo, juntos. Abajo, las olas retumbaban despacio, cada vez más fuertes con cada tanda.

Near the lighthouse Polly found a tall stone statue. It had the head of a deer and held a surfboard under one arm. An old legend and a new sport, together. Below, the waves boomed slowly, growing stronger with every set.
