În dimineața a patra, trenul era la vest de Novosibirsk. Polly s-a uitat la ceas. Arăta 06:30. Ceasul nu se schimbase de când plecaseră din Moscova.

Vagonul restaurant avea pereți albastru pal și perdele din dantelă. Polly s-a așezat la o masă lângă fereastră.
Un chelner i-a adus un meniu. Ea și-a înclinat capul. El a luat meniul înapoi. Apoi i-a adus o farfurie mică. Pâine, unt și hering sărat.
"Complimente din partea bucătăriei," a spus el.
Heringul era sărat. Pâinea era acră. Rușii mănâncă asta în trenuri de o sută douăzeci de ani.
Afară, pădurea devenise o pajiște deschisă. Vaci pășteau lângă o casă mică. Un bărbat pe o bicicletă aștepta la o trecere de cale ferată.
