La tazza vuota

Era il primo giorno di Pedro nel suo nuovo lavoro. Arrivò venti minuti in anticipo. L'ufficio era al quarto piano di un edificio vicino al fiume. Qualcuno gli mostrò la sua scrivania e gli diede un portatile. Poi sparì in una riunione.

It was Pedro's first day at his new job. He arrived twenty minutes early. The office was on the fourth floor of a building near the river. Someone showed him his desk and gave him a laptop. Then they disappeared into a meeting.

Pedro si sedette. La scrivania era pulita. C'era una sola tazza di ceramica nell'angolo, vuota. Pensò che forse fosse un regalo di benvenuto. Non beveva caffè, ma aveva sete.

Pedro sat down. The desk was clean. There was a single ceramic mug on the corner, empty. He thought it was a welcome gift, maybe. He didn't drink coffee, but he was thirsty.

Andò nella piccola cucina e riempì la tazza d'acqua. Quando tornò a sedersi, un uomo con la barba comparve all'ingresso del suo box. L'uomo guardò la tazza per un lungo secondo.

He walked to the small kitchen and filled the mug with water. When he sat back down, a man with a beard appeared at the door of his cubicle. The man looked at the mug for a long second.

«Quella era la mia tazza», disse. «Prima mi sedevo lì io.» Sorrise. «Tranquillo. Benvenuto. Sono Diego.»

"That was my mug," he said. "I sat there before." He smiled. "It's fine. Welcome. I'm Diego."

Pedro diventò rosso. Si scusò e gli offrì la tazza. Diego rise. «Tienila. Consideralo il tuo regalo di benvenuto. Ma chiedi prima per il caffè. La macchina è più complicata di quello che sembra.»

Pedro turned red. He apologized and offered the mug back. Diego laughed. "Keep it. Consider it your welcome gift. But ask first about the coffee. The machine is more complicated than it looks."

Più tardi, Diego gli mostrò come funzionava la macchina del caffè. Ci vollero dieci minuti.

Later, Diego showed him how the coffee machine worked. It took ten minutes.
