Half Dome

Polly decided to climb Half Dome. She did not climb on the rocks. She climbed in the air.

Polly besloot om de Half Dome te beklimmen. Ze klom niet op de rotsen. Ze klom in de lucht.

Half Dome is 1,500 metres of smooth granite. A glacier made it smooth 15,000 years ago.

Half Dome is 1.500 meter glad graniet. Een gletsjer maakte het 15.000 jaar geleden glad.

She started at first light. She flew up in slow circles.

Ze begon bij het eerste licht. Ze vloog omhoog in langzame cirkels.

At three hundred metres up, she joined a group of small fast birds called swifts. They moved fast. They screamed at each other. Polly was the slowest bird there.

Op driehonderd meter hoogte sloot ze zich aan bij een groep kleine snelle vogels die gierzwaluwen heten. Ze bewogen snel. Ze schreeuwden naar elkaar. Polly was de langzaamste vogel daar.

The wind got stronger. The warm rock heated the air. The warm air went up. It carried Polly up.

De wind werd sterker. De warme rots verwarmde de lucht. De warme lucht ging omhoog. Het droeg Polly omhoog.

Halfway up, she rested on a small ledge. She could see the cable route. People climb on cables up the back of the dome. It was closed for spring.

Halverwege rustte ze uit op een kleine richel. Ze kon de kabelroute zien. Mensen klimmen via kabels aan de achterkant van de koepel omhoog. Het was gesloten voor de lente.

At the top, the granite was flat. There were small piles of stones. People had left them.

Bovenop was het graniet vlak. Er lagen kleine stapeltjes stenen. Mensen hadden ze achtergelaten.

She walked to the edge. She looked down. The valley was far below. The trees looked like green fuzz.

Ze liep naar de rand. Ze keek naar beneden. De vallei was ver beneden. De bomen leken op groene pluisjes.

She pushed off the edge in a small dive. Then she opened her wings and glided down.

Ze duwde zich van de rand in een kleine duik. Toen opende ze haar vleugels en zweefde naar beneden.
