Cada olla estaba llena de carne, embutido, repollo y verduras. Los agujeros se calientan desde abajo por el volcán, hasta casi la misma temperatura que el agua hirviendo. No se usa fuego en absoluto. El calor viene solo de las profundidades, por grietas marcadas con anillos de piedra hace mucho tiempo.
El cocinero le mostró a Polly, sobre todo con las manos, que las ollas permanecen enterradas durante seis o siete horas. La gente va a visitar el lago o el pueblo mientras espera. Luego regresan a desenterrar su cena.
