Polly conoce a alguien

La mañana en que Polly llegó a la calle de los Robles, el barrio entero olía a pan recién hecho. Dejó sus dos maletas junto a la puerta verde y saludó a la primera vecina que vio: una osa enorme que regaba sus geranios. "¡Hola! Me llamo Polly. Llegué esta mañana."

The morning Polly arrived on Oak Street, the whole neighborhood smelled of fresh bread. Polly left two suitcases by the green door and greeted the first neighbor in sight: an enormous bear watering her geraniums. "Hello! My name is Polly. I arrived this morning."

La osa se limpió las patas en el delantal y sonrió. "Yo soy Berta. Vivo aquí desde hace veinte años." Hablaron un buen rato junto a la valla: de dónde venía Polly, a qué se dedicaba, y por qué había elegido precisamente esta calle. "Enseño idiomas", explicó Polly. "Trabajo desde casa, así que nos vamos a ver mucho."

The bear wiped her paws on her apron and smiled. "I am Berta. I have lived here for twenty years." They talked for a good while by the fence: where Polly came from, what Polly did for a living, and why this street of all streets. "I teach languages," Polly explained. "I work from home, so we are going to see a lot of each other."

Cuando el sol ya estaba alto, Berta señaló la plaza al final de la calle. "Mañana hay mercado. Si quieres, te enseño dónde compro la fruta." Polly aceptó de inmediato. "Mucho gusto, Berta. ¡Hasta luego!" Y al entrar en la casa nueva, Polly pensó que aprender los nombres de los vecinos iba a ser la mejor manera de empezar.

When the sun was high, Berta pointed at the square at the end of the street. "There is a market tomorrow. If you want, I will show you where I buy my fruit." Polly accepted right away. "Nice to meet you, Berta. See you later!" And stepping into the new house, Polly thought that learning the neighbors' names was going to be the best possible start.
