Polly conhece alguém

Na manhã em que Polly chegou à Rua dos Carvalhos, o bairro inteiro cheirava a pão acabado de fazer. Polly pousou duas malas junto à porta verde e cumprimentou a primeira vizinha à vista: uma ursa enorme que regava os seus gerânios. «Olá! Chamo-me Polly. Cheguei esta manhã.»

The morning Polly arrived on Oak Street, the whole neighborhood smelled of fresh bread. Polly left two suitcases by the green door and greeted the first neighbor in sight: an enormous bear watering her geraniums. "Hello! My name is Polly. I arrived this morning."

A ursa limpou as patas ao avental e sorriu. «Eu sou a Berta. Vivo aqui há vinte anos.» A conversa junto à vedação durou um bom bocado: de onde vinha Polly, o que fazia Polly na vida, e porquê aquela rua e não outra. «Ensino línguas», explicou Polly. «Trabalho em casa, por isso vamos ver-nos muito.»

The bear wiped her paws on her apron and smiled. "I am Berta. I have lived here for twenty years." They talked for a good while by the fence: where Polly came from, what Polly did for a living, and why this street of all streets. "I teach languages," Polly explained. "I work from home, so we are going to see a lot of each other."

Quando o sol já ia alto, Berta apontou para a praça no fim da rua. «Amanhã há mercado. Se quiseres, mostro-te onde compro a fruta.» Polly aceitou logo. «Muito prazer, Berta. Até logo!» E ao entrar na casa nova, Polly pensou que aprender os nomes dos vizinhos ia ser a melhor maneira de começar.

When the sun was high, Berta pointed at the square at the end of the street. "There is a market tomorrow. If you want, I will show you where I buy my fruit." Polly accepted right away. "Nice to meet you, Berta. See you later!" And stepping into the new house, Polly thought that learning the neighbors' names was going to be the best possible start.
