Polly conosce qualcuno

La mattina dell'arrivo di Polly in via delle Querce, tutto il quartiere profumava di pane appena sfornato. Polly ha posato due valigie accanto alla porta verde e ha salutato la prima vicina in vista: un'orsa enorme che annaffiava i suoi gerani. "Ciao! Mi chiamo Polly. Ho traslocato stamattina."

The morning Polly arrived on Oak Street, the whole neighborhood smelled of fresh bread. Polly left two suitcases by the green door and greeted the first neighbor in sight: an enormous bear watering her geraniums. "Hello! My name is Polly. I arrived this morning."

L'orsa si è pulita le zampe sul grembiule e ha sorriso. "Io sono Berta. Vivo qui da venti anni." La conversazione accanto alla staccionata è durata un bel po': da dove veniva Polly, che lavoro faceva Polly e perché proprio questa via. "Insegno lingue", ha spiegato Polly. "Lavoro da casa, quindi ci vedremo spesso."

The bear wiped her paws on her apron and smiled. "I am Berta. I have lived here for twenty years." They talked for a good while by the fence: where Polly came from, what Polly did for a living, and why this street of all streets. "I teach languages," Polly explained. "I work from home, so we are going to see a lot of each other."

Quando il sole era già alto, Berta ha indicato la piazza in fondo alla via. "Domani c'è il mercato. Se vuoi, ti mostro dove compro la frutta." Polly ha accettato subito. "Piacere, Berta. A dopo!" Ed entrando nella casa nuova, Polly ha pensato che imparare i nomi dei vicini sarebbe stato il modo migliore per cominciare.

When the sun was high, Berta pointed at the square at the end of the street. "There is a market tomorrow. If you want, I will show you where I buy my fruit." Polly accepted right away. "Nice to meet you, Berta. See you later!" And stepping into the new house, Polly thought that learning the neighbors' names was going to be the best possible start.
