Polly trifft jemanden

An dem Morgen, an dem Polly in die Eichenstraße kam, roch das ganze Viertel nach frischem Brot. Zwei Koffer standen neben der grünen Tür, und Polly grüßte die erste Nachbarin in Sichtweite: eine riesige Bärin, die ihre Geranien goss. „Hallo! Ich heiße Polly. Heute Morgen bin ich angekommen.“

The morning Polly arrived on Oak Street, the whole neighborhood smelled of fresh bread. Polly left two suitcases by the green door and greeted the first neighbor in sight: an enormous bear watering her geraniums. "Hello! My name is Polly. I arrived this morning."

Die Bärin wischte sich die Pfoten an der Schürze ab und lächelte. „Ich bin Berta. Ich wohne seit zwanzig Jahren hier.“ Das Gespräch am Zaun dauerte eine ganze Weile: woher Polly kam, was Polly beruflich machte und warum ausgerechnet diese Straße. „Ich unterrichte Sprachen“, erklärte Polly. „Ich arbeite von zu Hause aus, wir werden uns also oft sehen.“

The bear wiped her paws on her apron and smiled. "I am Berta. I have lived here for twenty years." They talked for a good while by the fence: where Polly came from, what Polly did for a living, and why this street of all streets. "I teach languages," Polly explained. "I work from home, so we are going to see a lot of each other."

Als die Sonne hoch stand, zeigte Berta auf den Platz am Ende der Straße. „Morgen ist Markt. Wenn du willst, zeige ich dir, wo ich mein Obst kaufe.“ Polly sagte sofort zu. „Freut mich, Berta. Bis später!“ Und beim Betreten des neuen Hauses dachte Polly, dass die Namen der Nachbarn zu lernen der beste mögliche Anfang war.

When the sun was high, Berta pointed at the square at the end of the street. "There is a market tomorrow. If you want, I will show you where I buy my fruit." Polly accepted right away. "Nice to meet you, Berta. See you later!" And stepping into the new house, Polly thought that learning the neighbors' names was going to be the best possible start.
