Am siebten Morgen sollte der Zug in Wladiwostok ankommen. Die Moskauer Uhr zeigte 06:15. Die lokale Uhr zeigte 13:15. Polly wachte beim ersten Licht auf.
Der Wald draußen hatte sich in sanfte Hügel und Gras verwandelt. Der Pazifik lag vor ihr. Sie konnte ihn spüren.
Der letzte Halt vor Wladiwostok war Ussurijsk. Der Zug hielt für fünfzehn Minuten. Polly sprang hinunter. Eine Frau verkaufte geräucherten Fisch. Polly probierte ein Stück. Die Frau wickelte es ein und lehnte eine Bezahlung ab.
Der Pazifik erschien auf der rechten Seite des Zuges. Er war grau und hell.
Wladiwostok kam plötzlich in Sicht. Die Stadt liegt in Hügeln, die bis zum Meer reichen. Der Zug endete direkt am Hafen.
Die Moskauer Uhr zeigte 06:23. Die lokale Uhr zeigte 13:23.
Polly sprang hinunter. Wladiwostok roch nach Fisch, Rost und Salz. Steile Straßen führten hinunter zu den Docks.
Am Ende des Bahnsteigs stand ein kleiner weißer Obelisk. Darauf stand: KILOMETER 9.289. Das Ende der Strecke.
Polly stand eine lange Minute am Obelisken. Sieben Tage. Fünfundzwanzig Millionen Jahre des Baikalsees. Ein Kran. Acht Zeitzonen.
Sie streckte ihre Flügel. Der Pazifik lag gleich hinter der Hafenmauer. Sie hob ab. Sie flog über die Kräne des Hafens. Das Japanische Meer öffnete sich vor ihr.
