Vladivostok

On the seventh morning, the train was due into Vladivostok. The Moscow clock said 06:15. The local clock said 13:15. Polly woke at first light.

Na manhã do sétimo dia, o trem estava prestes a chegar em Vladivostok. O relógio de Moscou marcava 06:15. O relógio local marcava 13:15. Polly acordou com a primeira luz do dia.

The forest outside had become low hills and grass. The Pacific was ahead. She could feel it.

A floresta lá fora havia se transformado em colinas baixas e gramados. O Pacífico estava à frente. Ela podia senti-lo.

The last stop before Vladivostok was Ussuriysk. The train stopped for fifteen minutes. Polly hopped down. A woman was selling smoked fish. Polly tried a piece. The woman wrapped it and refused payment.

A última parada antes de Vladivostok foi Ussuriysk. O trem parou por quinze minutos. Polly desceu. Uma mulher estava vendendo peixe defumado. Polly experimentou um pedaço. A mulher embrulhou e recusou o pagamento.

The Pacific appeared on the right side of the train. It was grey and bright.

O Pacífico apareceu do lado direito do trem. Estava cinza e brilhante.

Vladivostok arrived all at once. The city sits in hills that come down to the sea. The train ended right at the harbour.

Vladivostok surgiu de repente. A cidade fica em colinas que descem até o mar. O trem parou bem no porto.

Polly hopped down. Vladivostok smelled of fish and rust and salt. Steep streets came down to the docks.

Polly desceu. Vladivostok cheirava a peixe, ferrugem e sal. Ruas íngremes desciam até os cais.

At the end of the platform was a small white obelisk. It read: KILOMETRE 9,289. The end of the line.

No final da plataforma havia um pequeno obelisco branco. Estava escrito: QUILÔMETRO 9.289. O fim da linha.

Polly stood at the obelisk for a long minute. Seven days. Twenty-five million years of Lake Baikal. One crane. Eight time zones.

Polly ficou em frente ao obelisco por um longo minuto. Sete dias. Vinte e cinco milhões de anos do Lago Baikal. Um guindaste. Oito fusos horários.

She stretched her wings. The Pacific was just past the harbour wall. She lifted off. She flew over the cranes of the port. The Sea of Japan opened in front of her.

Ela esticou suas asas. O Pacífico estava logo além do muro do porto. Ela levantou voo. Voou sobre os guindastes do porto. O Mar do Japão se abriu à sua frente.
