Lake Baikal

Polly woke on the fifth morning. The world had become water.

Polly acordou na quinta manhã. O mundo tinha se transformado em água.

The train was running along Lake Baikal. The lake filled the whole window. The water was a deep, perfect blue.

O trem estava passando ao longo do Lago Baikal. O lago preenchia toda a janela. A água era de um azul profundo e perfeito.

Igor, the fisherman, was at the window with a notebook.

Igor, o pescador, estava na janela com um caderno.

"Baikal," he said. "It is the deepest lake in the world. 1,642 metres deep. It is also the oldest lake. 25 million years old."

"Baikal," ele disse. "É o lago mais profundo do mundo. Tem 1.642 metros de profundidade. Também é o lago mais antigo. Tem 25 milhões de anos."

The water was so clear that Polly could see rocks on the lake floor in the shallow places.

A água era tão clara que Polly conseguia ver as pedras no fundo do lago nos lugares mais rasos.

"It holds 23 percent of all the fresh water on Earth that is not frozen," Igor said. "More than all the Great Lakes in North America together."

"Ele contém 23 por cento de toda a água doce da Terra que não está congelada," disse Igor. "Mais do que todos os Grandes Lagos da América do Norte juntos."

The train stopped at Slyudyanka station. Igor got off. He shook Polly's wing tip with two fingers. "Three days fishing. Then home." He waved and was gone.

O trem parou na estação de Slyudyanka. Igor desceu. Ele apertou a ponta da asa de Polly com dois dedos. "Três dias de pesca. Depois, casa." Ele acenou e foi embora.

The train ran along the lake for three more hours. A group of Baikal seals came up to the surface. They are the only freshwater seals in the world.

O trem seguiu ao longo do lago por mais três horas. Um grupo de focas do Baikal apareceu na superfície. Elas são as únicas focas de água doce do mundo.

Polly thought about how much water was below her. A tiny pink shrimp lives in Baikal. It keeps the water clean. It has been doing this job for 20 million years.

Polly pensou em quanta água estava abaixo dela. Um pequeno camarão rosa vive no Baikal. Ele mantém a água limpa. Está fazendo esse trabalho há 20 milhões de anos.
