Igor, il pescatore, era alla finestra con un quaderno.
"Baikal," disse. "È il lago più profondo del mondo. 1.642 metri di profondità. È anche il lago più antico. Ha 25 milioni di anni."
L'acqua era così limpida che Polly poteva vedere le rocce sul fondo del lago nei punti meno profondi.
"Contiene il 23 percento di tutta l'acqua dolce sulla Terra che non è congelata," disse Igor. "Più di tutti i Grandi Laghi del Nord America messi insieme."
Il treno si fermò alla stazione di Slyudyanka. Igor scese. Scosse la punta dell'ala di Polly con due dita. "Tre giorni di pesca. Poi a casa." Salutò con la mano e se ne andò.
Il treno proseguì lungo il lago per altre tre ore. Un gruppo di foche del Baikal emerse in superficie. Sono le uniche foche d'acqua dolce al mondo.
Polly pensò a quanta acqua ci fosse sotto di lei. Un piccolo gamberetto rosa vive nel Baikal. Mantiene l'acqua pulita. Fa questo lavoro da 20 milioni di anni.
