Erano passate le undici quando Marcos arrivò finalmente in albergo. Il suo volo era atterrato con due ore di ritardo e il tassista aveva fatto il giro lungo per la città. Posò la valigia sul pavimento dell'ingresso e guardò la donna dietro il bancone.
«Prenotazione a nome Marcos Soto», disse. Aveva ripetuto la frase in aereo. La donna digitò per un momento, poi fece una piccola smorfia che lui non riuscì a interpretare.
«Mi dispiace», disse lei. «La sua stanza non è più disponibile. Abbiamo avuto un problema con il sistema di prenotazione. Ma ce n'è ancora una, al terzo piano.» Fece una pausa. «Ha il balcone. Allo stesso prezzo.»
Marcos prese la chiave senza discutere. L'ascensore era più vecchio di lui. Gemette mentre saliva. Quando aprì la porta della 304 e tirò indietro le tende, la città si stendeva sotto di lui: tetti, finestre illuminate, una piccola piazza con una fontana ancora in funzione.
Uscì sul balcone con il cappotto addosso e rimase a guardare due persone che si dividevano una sigaretta accanto alla fontana. Il vento era freddo. Non si mosse per molto tempo.
