The Empty Mug

It was Pedro's first day at his new job. He arrived twenty minutes early. The office was on the fourth floor of a building near the river. Someone showed him his desk and gave him a laptop. Then they disappeared into a meeting.

Era o primeiro dia de Pedro no seu novo trabalho. Chegou vinte minutos antes. O escritório ficava no quarto andar de um edifício perto do rio. Alguém lhe mostrou a secretária e deu-lhe um portátil. Depois desapareceu para dentro de uma reunião.

Pedro sat down. The desk was clean. There was a single ceramic mug on the corner, empty. He thought it was a welcome gift, maybe. He didn't drink coffee, but he was thirsty.

Pedro sentou-se. A secretária estava limpa. Havia uma única caneca de cerâmica no canto, vazia. Pensou que talvez fosse um presente de boas-vindas. Não bebia café, mas tinha sede.

He walked to the small kitchen and filled the mug with water. When he sat back down, a man with a beard appeared at the door of his cubicle. The man looked at the mug for a long second.

Foi à pequena cozinha e encheu a caneca de água. Quando voltou a sentar-se, um homem com barba apareceu à entrada do seu cubículo. O homem olhou para a caneca durante um segundo longo.

"That was my mug," he said. "I sat there before." He smiled. "It's fine. Welcome. I'm Diego."

— Essa era a minha caneca — disse. — Eu sentava-me aí antes. — Sorriu. — Calma. Bem-vindo. Sou o Diego.

Pedro turned red. He apologized and offered the mug back. Diego laughed. "Keep it. Consider it your welcome gift. But ask first about the coffee. The machine is more complicated than it looks."

Pedro ficou vermelho. Pediu desculpa e ofereceu-lhe a caneca. Diego riu-se. — Fica com ela. Considera-a o teu presente de boas-vindas. Mas pergunta primeiro pelo café. A máquina é mais complicada do que parece.

Later, Diego showed him how the coffee machine worked. It took ten minutes.

Mais tarde, Diego mostrou-lhe como funcionava a máquina de café. Demoraram dez minutos.
