Above the Valley

Polly flew into Yosemite. The wind smelled of pine. Tall cliffs were on both sides. A river was below.

폴리는 요세미티로 날아갔다. 바람은 소나무 향기로 가득했다. 양쪽에는 높은 절벽이 있었다. 아래에는 강이 흐르고 있었다.

She climbed high. The valley looked like a big U cut in stone. Long ago, ice made it this shape. The ice pushed through and ground the floor flat.

폴리는 높이 올라갔다. 계곡은 마치 돌에 새겨진 큰 U자 모양처럼 보였다. 오래 전, 얼음이 이 모양을 만들었다. 얼음이 밀고 지나가면서 바닥을 평평하게 갈아놓았다.

She flew to El Capitan. The cliff was very tall. Two tiny climbers were on the rock face.

폴리는 엘 캐피탄으로 날아갔다. 그 절벽은 매우 높았다. 두 명의 작은 등반가가 바위 면에 있었다.

Polly perched on a pine tree. The needles smelled like butterscotch. She watched the climbers. They moved slowly and carefully.

폴리는 소나무에 앉았다. 바늘은 버터스카치 향기가 났다. 그녀는 등반가들을 지켜보았다. 그들은 천천히 그리고 조심스럽게 움직였다.

A ranger's truck went up the road below. Polly thought about riding with a ranger one day.

레인저의 트럭이 아래 도로를 올라갔다. 폴리는 언젠가 레인저와 함께 타고 가는 것을 생각했다.

She flew down slowly. A big bird called a turkey vulture rose past her on warm air. Polly watched it climb.

그녀는 천천히 아래로 날아갔다. 큰 새인 칠면조 독수리가 따뜻한 공기를 타고 그녀를 지나 올라갔다. 폴리는 그것이 올라가는 것을 지켜보았다.

At the valley floor, the air was warm and dim. Polly landed on a huge fallen pine tree. Moss was on it.

계곡 바닥에 도착하니 공기는 따뜻하고 어두웠다. 폴리는 큰 쓰러진 소나무에 앉았다. 그 위에는 이끼가 있었다.

The Merced River ran past. The water was brown from melting snow. Polly put her yellow feet in the cold water. It made her toes ache.

머세드 강이 옆을 지나갔다. 물은 녹은 눈 때문에 갈색이었다. 폴리는 차가운 물에 노란 발을 담갔다. 발가락이 아려왔다.

A sign said SHUTTLE TO VISITOR CENTER. Polly flew to the bus stop.

표지판에는 '방문자 센터로 가는 셔틀'이라고 적혀 있었다. 폴리는 버스 정류장으로 날아갔다.

The shuttle was a green bus. A ranger was the driver. She opened the door for Polly.

셔틀은 녹색 버스였다. 레인저가 운전사였다. 그녀는 폴리를 위해 문을 열어주었다.

Polly hopped onto a railing inside. The bus drove. El Capitan moved slowly past the window.

폴리는 안쪽 난간에 뛰어올랐다. 버스가 출발했다. 엘 캐피탄이 창문을 천천히 지나갔다.

At the last stop, Polly tucked her head under her wing. She slept.

마지막 정류장에서 폴리는 날개 아래로 머리를 감췄다. 그녀는 잠이 들었다.
