Above the Valley

Polly flew into Yosemite. The wind smelled of pine. Tall cliffs were on both sides. A river was below.

Polly survolait Yosemite. Le vent sentait le pin. De hautes falaises se dressaient de chaque côté. Une rivière coulait en bas.

She climbed high. The valley looked like a big U cut in stone. Long ago, ice made it this shape. The ice pushed through and ground the floor flat.

Elle monta haut dans le ciel. La vallée ressemblait à un grand U taillé dans la pierre. Il y a longtemps, la glace lui avait donné cette forme. La glace avait poussé et aplati le sol.

She flew to El Capitan. The cliff was very tall. Two tiny climbers were on the rock face.

Elle vola jusqu'à El Capitan. La falaise était très haute. Deux petits grimpeurs étaient sur la paroi rocheuse.

Polly perched on a pine tree. The needles smelled like butterscotch. She watched the climbers. They moved slowly and carefully.

Polly se posa sur un pin. Les aiguilles sentaient le caramel. Elle observait les grimpeurs. Ils avançaient lentement et prudemment.

A ranger's truck went up the road below. Polly thought about riding with a ranger one day.

Un camion de garde forestier montait la route en contrebas. Polly pensa qu'un jour, elle aimerait bien faire un tour avec un garde.

She flew down slowly. A big bird called a turkey vulture rose past her on warm air. Polly watched it climb.

Elle descendit lentement. Un grand oiseau appelé vautour dinde s'éleva près d'elle, porté par l'air chaud. Polly le regarda grimper.

At the valley floor, the air was warm and dim. Polly landed on a huge fallen pine tree. Moss was on it.

Au fond de la vallée, l'air était chaud et tamisé. Polly atterrit sur un énorme pin tombé. Il était couvert de mousse.

The Merced River ran past. The water was brown from melting snow. Polly put her yellow feet in the cold water. It made her toes ache.

La rivière Merced coulait à côté. L'eau était brune à cause de la neige fondue. Polly mit ses pieds jaunes dans l'eau froide. Cela lui faisait mal aux orteils.

A sign said SHUTTLE TO VISITOR CENTER. Polly flew to the bus stop.

Un panneau indiquait NAVETTE VERS LE CENTRE DES VISITEURS. Polly vola jusqu'à l'arrêt de bus.

The shuttle was a green bus. A ranger was the driver. She opened the door for Polly.

La navette était un bus vert. Un garde forestier en était le conducteur. Elle ouvrit la porte pour Polly.

Polly hopped onto a railing inside. The bus drove. El Capitan moved slowly past the window.

Polly sauta sur une rambarde à l'intérieur. Le bus démarra. El Capitan défilait lentement par la fenêtre.

At the last stop, Polly tucked her head under her wing. She slept.

À l'arrêt final, Polly glissa sa tête sous son aile. Elle s'endormit.
