A Névoa Fecha-se Atrás Dela

Na sua última tarde, Polly voou outra vez bem alto acima da costa. Por baixo dela ficavam os campos de chá, a cratera com as suas duas lagoas e a floresta silenciosa onde o priolo ainda vive. Dali de cima, a ilha parecia aquilo que é: uma cadeia de vulcões antigos, ainda a arrefecer devagar até ficarem verdes.

On her last afternoon, Polly flew high above the coast again. Below her lay the tea fields, the crater with its two lakes, and the quiet forest where the priolo still lives. From up there, the island looked like what it is: a chain of old volcanoes, still slowly cooling into green.

Os barcos de pesca voltavam ao porto, deixando linhas brancas e finas no mar cada vez mais escuro. As luzes acendiam-se uma a uma ao longo da estrada da costa. O cheiro a fumo subia da praia.

Fishing boats were heading back to the harbor, leaving thin white lines on the darkening sea. Lights came on one by one along the coast road. The smell of smoke drifted up from the shore.

O nevoeiro entrou do oceano, tal como tinha feito toda a semana. Cobriu a cratera, depois os campos de chá, depois o porto, escondendo a ilha devagar. Polly já o tinha visto fazer isto antes.

Fog rolled in from the ocean, just as it had all week. It covered the crater, then the tea fields, then the harbor, hiding the island slowly from view. Polly had seen it do this before.

Voou para o mar aberto enquanto a última luz se apagava. Atrás dela, a ilha continuava a cozinhar o jantar debaixo da terra, a fazer crescer o chá folha a folha e a manter em segurança uma pequena ave cinzenta na sua floresta.

She flew out over open water as the last light faded. Behind her, the island kept cooking its dinner underground, growing its tea leaf by leaf, and keeping a small grey bird safe in its forest.
